Wolvaardt and Bosch Command the Proteas SACA MVP rankings

The 2025/26 South African international cricket season has come to an end, and the final standings highlight impressive performances in both the men’s and women’s games. Following the Proteas Women’s 23-run win over India at Willowmoore Park, the SACA MVP rankings confirm a historic achievement for the summer.

For the first time since the current ranking system began, both the Men’s and Women’s tables have been led by the same two individuals, Laura Wolvaardt and Corbin Bosch, from the first tour of the season. This season-long residency at the top is a historic anomaly that highlights the professional standards and world-class consistency set by the pair.

The SACA MVP uses a detailed performance metric to evaluate players in every match. It measures runs, wickets, fielding, the strength of the opposition, and match pressure. By measuring all-around contributions and key moments, the rankings showcase the player who made the biggest impact on their team’s success.

Wolvaardt had an outstanding summer, showing skill in both batting and leadership. She set new records for the women’s game. In her last match in Benoni, she scored an unbeaten 92 from 56 balls, helping secure a 4-1 T20i series win over India and finishing with 493.877 MVP points.

At 27, she became the first South African woman to score over 1,000 ODI runs in a calendar year. She led the order, with Suné Luus finishing second with 306.495 MVP points and Chloe Tryon third with 219.002. Together, they managed a tough schedule and helped the Proteas Women finish the year with a win in front of their home fans.

Corbin Bosch made his own history in the men’s arena. Since the season’s opening matches, Bosch held the number one spot in the rankings, finishing the year with 426.739 MVP points. His rise reflects the modern all-rounder’s immense value; his ability to break partnerships with the ball and provide explosive lower-order runs was indispensable during the Proteas’ World Cup campaign and the New Zealand tour. Bosch’s ability to maintain his lead is impressive given the calibre of challengers. Aiden Markram finished second with 383.06 MVP points, boosted by his tactical captaincy and elegance, while Dewald Brevis secured third with 343.74 MVP points.

The MVP rankings are a clear measure of player contribution, focusing on important moments rather than just totals. The algorithm gives points for runs scored, runs saved with the ball, and fielding. It also considers the strength of the opposition, match situations, and pressure moments like chasing a big target or performing in must-win games.

Every action, such as a catch in a close game or runs against a strong team, is valued based on its context, with more points for key moments. This approach gives an objective and thorough assessment, so cricket fans can trust the final rankings.

Andrew Breetzke, SACA CEO, said, “Seeing two players lead their respective rankings from the season’s inception to its conclusion is a testament to their professional growth and resilience. By utilising a sophisticated algorithm that evaluates each ball based on context, opposition strength, and match pressure, the rankings reflect the individuals who consistently drive team success. As the players head into a well-deserved break, the 2025/26 season will be remembered as the year that Wolvaardt and Bosch turned the rankings into a two-horse race, setting a new benchmark for individual excellence in South African cricket.”
