The South African Cricketers’ Association (SACA) anticipates an exciting international summer for both the Proteas Men and Women. Kicking off with the upcoming Namibia series, the Proteas Men will use these fixtures to fine-tune preparations ahead of the Men’s ICC World Cup.
While the Proteas Women’s schedule starts later in the calendar, the team will be concentrating on building on their recent successes. The top performers from last season, who were awarded MVP, are especially keen to maintain their high standard.
Last season’s SACA MVP winners established the benchmark for international performance and will look to grow their influence on the world stage in the coming months. In the men’s setup, Corbin Bosch secured the Overall SACA MVP, alongside format winners Keshav Maharaj (Test), Matthew Breetzke (ODI), and Dewald Brevis (T20I). In the women’s ranks, Laura Wolvaardt claimed the title in the Overall, T20i and ODI MVP titles, with standout performances from Nonkululeko Mlaba in Test.
The SACA MVP offers a transparent, objective account of player performance, using only runs scored and runs saved to calculate it. Cricket is a data-heavy sport; it is important for SACA to provide players with a reliable tool to measure their contributions in matches.
The algorithm goes beyond basic statistics and includes advanced contextual indicators such as historical stadium data, opposing team strength, and refined score predictions. By considering these factors, the system ensures that the importance and pressure of each run, wicket, and catch are reflected in the player’s final rating.
SACA Chief Executive Officer Andrew Breetzke shared a message of support for the squads: “We wish the Proteas Men and Women the best during what will be a busy period for both teams. While the SACA MVP system offers an objective measure of performance, it is the resilience and commitment of our players that will drive our teams forward.”
As the summer unfolds, the SACA MVP will offer insight into the performances that shape South African cricket. With both national teams poised for high-stakes encounters, the stage is set for a thrilling period of international competition.
