Liam Alder Named Overall SACA MVP for Domestic Division 2

Following the completion of all domestic fixtures, Liam Alder of the Garden Route Badgers finished at the top of the SACA MVP overall rankings, identifying him as the most valuable player in the division across all formats.

Alder won the Overall Division 2 SACA MVP title with 360,805 points across 20 matches, providing a consistent baseline for his team. His slow left-arm orthodox bowling earned him 257,542 bowling points, while his contributions with the bat resulted in 65,262 batting points, comprising two half-centuries in the 4-Day Series, where he maintained an average of 35.22. Alder’s total was further supported by 11 winning points and 7 fielding points, marking him as the most statistically active performer in the division this summer.

Emanuel Motswiri of the Limpopo Impalas was named the 1-Day Cup SACA MVP in Division 2. In six matches, Motswiri accumulated 126,878 total MVP points through a campaign based on bowling performance, where he took 16 wickets at an average of 16.81 and an economy rate of 5.85. Motswiri also provided middle-order runs, scoring two half-centuries to earn 24,851 batting points, showcasing his ability to perform in the 50-over format.

The red-ball format of the division was led by all-rounder Ernest Kemm of the Eastern Storm, who won the 4-Day Series SACA MVP title with 309,037 points. Since moving to the Eastern Storm, Kemm has added value to the team environment as a senior player, and his impact is reflected in his second-place finish in the overall rankings with 341,536 points. He ended the season as the division’s leading wicket-taker with 40 wickets, including five five-wicket hauls.

The T20 Knockout MVP went to Alindile Mhletywa of the Eastern Cape Iinyathi, who topped the rankings with 101,912 MVP points after taking 15 wickets at an average of 12.08 during the Iinyathi T20 campaign.

Recognition of these performances is facilitated by the SACA MVP ranking system, which measures player impact in CSA’s domestic competitions. Administered by statistician Andrew Samson, the domestic SACA MVP algorithm provides a data-driven analysis of performance, awarding points for batting, bowling, and fielding metrics based on match context and oppositional strength. Match impact points are also awarded for team wins and Man of the Match performances, ensuring recognition is based on statistical impact and match contributions.

The South African Cricketers’ Association (SACA) has announced the winners of the Domestic Women’s SACA MVP awards for the 2025/26 domestic season. Former Proteas captain Mignon du Preez, seasoned all-rounder Nicolien Janse van Rensburg, and emerging talent Alexandra Candler claimed the top honours across the overall and format-specific rankings, marking a season of high-performance cricket in the domestic landscape.

Mignon du Preez finished the season at the summit of the overall SACA MVP rankings with 249,953 total MVP points. Representing the North-West Dragons, the veteran batter’s consistency across both the Pro50 and Pro20 formats secured her the title. Du Preez remains a dominant force in domestic cricket, with her season marked by high-impact half-centuries and a superior points-per-match average. In the Pro50 series, she accumulated 142 runs across four innings at an average of 35.50, including two half-centuries.

Her performance in the CSA Women’s Pro20 Series 2025/26 was particularly noteworthy, where she recorded the most fifties in the competition. A standout moment of her campaign was a 115-run partnership with Lizri de Villiers against the Garden Route Badgers in Oudtshoorn, which ranks as the second-highest partnership of the Pro20 season. Her ability to anchor innings while maintaining a high strike rate provided a significant points cushion over her competitors, reinforcing her status as one of the premier performers in the South African game.

For the second consecutive year, Nicolien Janse van Rensburg has secured the Pro50 Series SACA MVP title, accumulating 147,843 points. The Garden Route Badgers all-rounder was the most valuable player of the Pro50 series and finished as the leading wicket-taker in the competition with 16 wickets. Throughout her Women’s List A career, Janse van Rensburg has maintained a bowling average of 15.97 and a strike rate of 23.95. Her 2025/26 campaign was bolstered by disciplined seam bowling, highlighted by best bowling figures of 5 for 28. Her match-winning influence was evident in her ability to strike regularly while maintaining an economy rate of 4.00, solidifying her reputation as a consistent senior player.

The Pro20 Series T20 MVP title was awarded to Alexandra Candler, who finished the shortest format with 163,266 points. The 22-year-old Dolphins all-rounder enjoyed a breakthrough season, showcasing versatility with both bat and ball. Administered by cricket statistician Andrew Samson, the algorithm provides an objective, data-driven analysis of player performance. Points are awarded based on batting metrics such as runs and strike rates, bowling performance including wickets and economy, and fielding contributions. Match impact bonus points are also awarded for team wins and Man of the Match performances. Kyle Simmonds capped off a dominant campaign by finishing at the summit of the Division 1 4-Day Series rankings. The left-arm spinner’s ability to bowl long, disciplined spells and provide crucial breakthroughs made him the standout performer for his team in the competition.

Simmonds was a constant threat throughout the 2025/26 4-Day Series, finishing as one of the top wicket-takers in the division with 28 wickets in 7 matches. His red-ball campaign was highlighted by a career-best performance against Boland, where he claimed match figures of 11/110—including 5/66 in the first innings and 6/44 in the second—to help secure a victory by an innings and 141 runs.

In addition to his bowling and batting prowess, Simmonds was reliable in the field, claiming 8 catches throughout the tournament. His consistency was reflected in a comprehensive total of 266,363 MVP points, built on 149,089 bowling points, 98,273 batting points, and 9 fielding points. His season was highlighted by five five-wicket hauls, with best bowling figures of 6/55. His match-winning influence is reflected in his final accumulation of 309,037 total MVP points, a tally significantly bolstered by 245,181 points from his bowling contributions alone. This clinical performance underscores his experience and earns him the title of the division’s most valuable player.

Mhletywa topped the tournament’s MVP rankings with a total of 101,912 points, edging out teammate Thozama Totana, 89,404 MVP points, and Free States Jacques Snyman on 88,972 MVP points.

His effectiveness with the ball was the driving force behind this impressive score, as his bowling contributions accounted for 74,821 of his total points. As one of the top bowlers in the competition, taking 15 wickets with best figures of 3/23 against Garden Route Badgers and maintaining a strong bowling average of 12.08.

SACA CEO Andrew Breetzke extended his congratulations, stating: “We are proud to celebrate the outstanding achievements of our division two domestic MVP winners. Brits has established a commanding lead as the overall Proteas Women’s SACA MVP with 51.256 MVP points. Her phenomenal start to the season was highlighted by a record-breaking performance in the recent ODI series against Pakistan, where she became the first South African woman to score consecutive ODI centuries. Her knocks of 101* and 171* (the latter a new highest score for a Proteas woman in ODIs) secured a series win and showcased her ability to anchor an innings and dominate the opposition.

Over the last 14 months, she has played 11 ODIs, scoring 399 runs at an average of 40, including a high score of 104 against Sri Lanka in May 2025, and taking 10 wickets at an average of 24.30. Today, the South African Cricketers’ Association (SACA) announced the SACA Most Valuable Player (SACA MVP) winners for the 2024/2025 domestic cricket season, recognising outstanding individual contributions in Division 1 and Division 2. Dolphins captain Prenelan Subrayen claimed the Division 1 SACA MVP award, while Eastern Cape Iinyathi all-rounder Jade de Klerk secured the Division 2 SACA MVP title.

Division 1 MVP: Prenelan Subrayen (Dolphins)

Prenelan Subrayen led the Division 1 SACA MVP rankings with a remarkable 382,761 MVP points, showcasing consistent performances across both the 4-Day Domestic Series and the CSA One-Day Cup. The Dolphins captain proved pivotal, leading his team to the final of the One-Day Cup competition.

In the 4-Day Series, the experienced spinner was a dominant influence, claiming an impressive 44 wickets in just seven matches. His standout performance against Western Province saw him achieve the best bowling figures in a match for the Division 1 series, taking 10 wickets for 110 runs at an exceptional economy rate of 1.97.

The final overall Division 2 SACA MVP standings saw de Klerk finish ahead of Ernest Kemm (368.413 MVP points) in second position and Sean Whitehead (318.347 MVP points) in third. The South African Cricketers’ Association (SACA) would like to congratulate Eastern Storm batter, Christ Britz on winning the inaugural Division 2 Most Valuable Player (MVP) award in the T20 rankings.

Britz’s exceptional performance throughout the CSA T20 Knock-Out Competition was highlighted by two centuries, including an unbeaten 107 against Northern Cape Heat, which propelled him to the top of the MVP rankings. His dominance extended beyond that single innings, as he finished the tournament as the leading run-scorer with a strike rate of 135.98.

The 25-year-old picked up points at an average of 12.712 MVP points, highlighting his consistent performances throughout the competition which earned him a total of 101.694 MVP points, a comfortable lead ahead of all-rounders, Tuskers Sean Gilson (87, 500 MVP points) and Limpopo Impala’s Morne Venter (84.634 MVP points).

OLIVIER LEADS SACA MVP RANKINGS AHEAD OF T20 CHALLENGE

VBK Knights fast bowler, Duanne Olivier currently leads the SACA MVP rankings, with Hollywoodbets Dolphins all-rounder Robbie Frylinck hot on his heels in second place, after both players turned in match winning performances for their respective teams during the Sunfoil Series.
Last season veteran and newcomer players battled for the title of the SACA’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) and this season promises to provide a similarly contested race amongst the country’s best domestic cricketers.

Olivier sits at the top of both the Overall MVP rankings and the four-day Sunfoil Series rankings, although there is still a long way to go in the Sunfoil Series and the two domestic limited-overs competitions still to come. With 28 wickets in five matches, which include two five-for’s and a nine wicket haul, Olivier is the leading wicket taker in the Sunfoil Series. His contribution thus far, has earned him 167.161 points in the MVP, to keep him 3.193 points ahead of Frylinck.
Frylinck’s record breaking performance with the ball in the second round of the Sunfoil Series against the bizhub Highveld Lions in Potchefstroom, which saw him end with a South African franchise record of 14 for 62, helped him climb 20 positions with his points’ tally leaping from 18.143 to 100.990 points. Frylinck has gone on to collect 163.968 from his five matches. His consistency and contribution with the bat and ball, has kept him in the race for the MVP.
The closest bunch of chasers in the SACA MVP at this early stage of the season are: 3rd Marchant de Lange (153.297 points), 4th Hardus Viljoen (134.512 points) and 5th Simon Harmer (131.857 points).
The MVP reflects a balanced distribution of points for players based on their on-field performances. Points awarded to players are based not only on runs and wickets, but also take into account catches, captaincy and the effect a player’s performance has on the success of his team and important stages of a match.
An indication of how reflective the rankings are is that 2015/16’s SACA MVP winner bizhub Highveld Lions’ Dwaine Pretorius and runner up, Hollywoodbets Dolphins’ Keshav Maharaj have both put in strong performances for their domestic teams in the matches they have played this season. Both players have also gone on to be selected for the Proteas, with Maharaj making his Test debut in the first Test of the current series against Australia. Pretorius has already played for the Proteas in the shorter format this year and has been called up to the Test squad following Dale Steyn’s series-ending injury.
Pretorius, currently seventh in the rankings, has played three games while Maharaj is 13th despite having only played two matches for his franchise.
The SACA MVP is an internationally recognised formula that records franchise players’ contribution to each match. VILJOEN AND COOK PUT LIONS IN SIGHT OF VICTORY

Hardus Viljoen SACA MVP Sunfoil Series 2015/16 winner  took six wickets and Stephen Cook struck an unbeaten half-century to carry the bizhub Highveld Lions to the brink of victory after two days of their Sunfoil Series opener against the BuildNat Cape Cobras in Johannesburg on Thursday.  Fast bowler Viljoen, whose early season form last year forced him into the Proteas set-up, took 6/75 as the visitors were bowled out for 211 at the bidvest Wanderers Stadium on the second day.

Despite that being the highest score of the match, the Cobras’ paltry first-innings 102 meant that the Lions needed 160 for victory and they were racing there thanks to Cook’s brisk 63 not out (56 balls, 12 fours).  They closed on 117/0 and needed just 43 more to seal a winning start to the campaign. Rassie van der Dussen was with his skipper on an unbeaten 43.  But the first half of the day was all about two of the country’s rising talents.

Despite Viljoen picking up his 21st career five-for, it was the man supporting him, Wiaan Mulder, who enjoyed a dream debut. The South Africa Under-19 captain was the pick of the bowlers in the first innings with his 3/10 and he took a fine 4/54 with his right-arm medium pace second time around. It meant the 18-year-old all-rounder shared all 10 wickets with Viljoen. Another rookie that enjoyed a stellar outing was Cobras all-rounder Jason Smith. The 21-year-old, playing in only the second franchise match of his career, fell five runs short of a century when he top scored with 95 (117, 16 fours) in the his side’s second innings.

Smith was also the pick of the bowlers earlier in the day when he took 4/24 as the Lions were bowled out for 154. Temba Bavuma finished unbeaten on 76 (119 balls, 12 fours, 1 six).

SACA CONGRATULATES DOMESTIC MVP WINNER DWAINE PRETORIUS

The South African Cricketers’ Association (SACA) today congratulated Bizhub Highveld Lions all-rounder, Dwaine Pretorius, on winning its Most Valuable Player (MVP) title for his performances over the three domestic competitions in the 2015/16 season.  Pretorius finished on a total of 468, 282 points.

The SACA MVP is a cumulative points system that rewards franchise players for every run scored, wicket taken and catch held in the three franchise domestic competitions, and also takes into account the context of the match and in which the performances are achieved. Each of the CSA domestic competitions has a unique weighting for each discipline, dependant on what is considered more important in that format (for example strike rate and economy rate in the T20 format).

Following his remarkable start to the season, Pretorius’ hard work with bat and ball earned the Lion’s all-rounder a total of 641 runs and 60 wickets in all competitions. Despite picking up an injury half way through the season, Pretorius was a strong contender for the top spot throughout, and in the end, he took the overall MVP title, 31.929 points ahead of Sunfoil Dolphins left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj who finished second.

“The SACA MVP is something all of us franchise cricketers strive to win because it combines what you do with bat, ball and in the field in all three competitions.  It is recognised by players as a measure of consistency throughout the season.  I’m proud to have won this but must also give some credit to my Lions teammates in helping me to do it” said Dwaine Pretorius.

The SACA MVP rankings also focus on performances in each particular competition.  Bizhub Highveld Lions paceman, Hardus Viljoen clinched the top spot in the four day Sunfoil Series MVP rankings from team mate Pretorius, doing so in the Lions final match against the Warriors. Viljoen’s performance kept him in the running for the title as he held his position at the top of the ranking for five of the nine Sunfoil Series matches he played.  He finished the Sunfoil Series as the top wicket-taker with 47 wickets.

Alviro Petersen was a runaway winner of the Momentum One-Day Cup MVP award after a record-breaking season in which he scored 726 runs, an astonishing 31% of all his teams runs. His remarkable total included five centuries, four in consecutive matches, and was compiled at an equally remarkable strike rate of 100.13 runs per hundred balls. His was the outstanding contribution in the Lions’ successful Momentum One Day Cup campaign.

The Unlimited Titans T20 captain, Albie Morkel, started the RamSlam T20 with a bang and stayed within touching distance of the top spot throughout the tournament. Morkel’s steady flow of runs and wickets, as well as his captaining proficiency, saw him edge out the VKB Knights international star, Andre Russell, by just 0.92 points.

“I’d like to congratulation Dwaine on winning the overall SACA MVP,” said SACA chief executive, Tony Irish.  “To achieve the top spot a player has to perform for his franchise pretty much week in and week out throughout the season.”

2015/16 SUNFOIL SIZZLER

 

Hardus Viljoen of the bizhub Highveld Lions has bagged the Sunfoil Series Sizzler award for the first five rounds of the Sunfoil Series which currently sees The Unlimited Titans, the VKB Knights and the bizhub Highveld Lions locked in a three-way battle for four-day cricket supremacy. The Lions are the current title holders.

The Sunfoil Sizzler award is worth R15 000.

Viljoen, who made his debut for the Castle Lager Proteas in the third Sunfoil Test match against the England touring team at the Bidvest Wanderers Stadium, has had a phenomenal Sunfoil Series campaign taking 30 wickets in 4 matches. This included back-to-back 10-wicket hauls in successive matches against the Sunfoil Dolphins and the Warriors.

Other players who came strongly into contention for the award were his bizhub Highveld Lions team mate, Dwaine Pretorius, Werner Coetsee of the VKB Knights, Keshav Maharaj of the Sunfoil Dolphins and Tabraiz Shamsi of The Unlimited Titans.

“Congratulations to Hardus on his Sunfoil Sizzler award,” commented Cricket South Africa (CSA) General Manager: Cricket, Corrie van Zyl. “His performance in taking back-to-back 10-wickets hauls is special and earned him a fully deserved call-up to the Proteas.

The South African Cricketers’ Association Most Valuable Player index (SACA MVP) is used as the measuring tool in determining the Sunfoil Sizzler of the Month.

The SACA MVP is calculated using an internationally recognised formula which takes into account every discipline in the game of cricket.  Batting, bowling, fielding, captaining and winning are all factored in within the context of each individual match. Individual player performances in pressure situations, for example, carry more weight; thus players who deliver when their team needs them most, earn more points.

The SACA MVP latest ranking standings are updated weekly on the SACA website (www.saca.org.za), and may be viewed ‘per competition’ or by having a look at the ‘overall’ standings.

KYLE ABBOTT NAMED SUNFOIL SIZZLER FOR FEBRUARY

KYLE ABBOTT of the Sunfoil Dolphins has bagged the Sunfoil Series Sizzler of the Month award for the month of February following his strong bowling performances in the two rounds of qualifying matches.

The Sunfoil Sizzler of the Month award is worth R15 000.

Abbott took 12/125 for the Dolphins in the match against the Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras. He is the joint leading wicket-taker in the competition (22) along with Simon Harmer of the Chevrolet Warriors. He has the best average (13.09) of those who have played more than three matches and he is also the most economical bowler (2.28).

Other players who came strongly into contention for the February award were Rudi Second of the Chevrolet Knights, Keshav Maharaj of the Sunfoil Dolphins, Shaun von Berg of The Unlimited Titans and Dane Piedt of the Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras.

“Congratulations to Kyle on his Sunfoil sizzler award,” commented Cricket South Africa (CSA) Chief Executive, Haroon Lorgat. “His splendid form earned him a recall to the Proteas Castle Lager Test squad and that should serve as an inspiration to all Franchise players.

“It is also interesting to note that three of the five top performers in February were spin bowlers.”

SACA CONGRATULATES SACA MVP WINNERS

The South African Cricketers’ Association (SACA) today congratulated this season’s SACA MVP (Most Valuable Player) winner, Nashua Titans all-rounder Roelof van der Merwe. Van der Merwe’s exceptional performances in the domestic competitions with bat, ball and in the field across all formats, saw him hold off stiff competition to finish at the top of the 2012 / 2013 SACA MVP ranking.

The SACA MVP is a measure of a Franchise player’s value to his Franchise team, and is based on his performances in Cricket South Africa’s three domestic competition formats – Sunfoil Series, Momentum One Day Cup and the RAMSLAMT20 Challenge.

The Proteas player’s generally don’t feature in the SACA MVP as they play an insufficient amount of franchise cricket.

The SACA MVP is calculated using an internationally recognised formula which takes into account every discipline in the game of cricket.  Batting, bowling, fielding, captaining and winning statistics are all considered within the context of each individual match. Individual player performances in pressure situations for example carry more weight, thus players who deliver when their team needs them most, earn more points.

Financial incentives are paid by SACA to the overall top 30 players in the SACA MVP, while those finishing in the top 10 for each domestic competition are also rewarded.

“This year, domestic cricket has been injected with new talent, and competition between franchises has been tougher as a result. Based on the performances in all three competitions, the likes of Van der Merwe, Chevrolet fast-medium bowler Andrew Birch, Highveld Lions pace-man Hardus Viljoen and new Proteas T20 opening batsman Quinton de Kock emerged as the main contenders for the award” said SACA’s Communications Manager, Zoli Xhola.

Van der Merwe came out as the overall winner, and will take home a cheque for R110, 000. Andrew Birch’s impressive displays in the Sunfoil Series and Momentum One Day Cup saw him receive a total of R66, 000 and finish second behind van der Merwe, while De Kock’s explosive displays in the RAM SLAM T20 Challenge helped him secure third place and a payment of R50, 000.
